Tracy Ellis was indirectly responsible for finding the lamp. She had thrown a bottle into her partner’s back yard in Wolf Road without paying any attention to where it might land. On hearing what she took to be a man shout in protest from the back area where the old tree stump rotted away and the fence shielded the yard from the street lamps, she had rushed back to the house, almost falling as her heel caught in the cracked vinyl tiles.

‘Craig! Someone’s there. Have a look will ya.’

It was unclear, even to herself, whether her fear was that she had hurt someone, or that someone was about to hurt her.

Craig rolled off the bean-bag with a scowl, and kicked the back door open again, letting white flickering light from the TV out into the yard. ‘I’ll fix him. Gimme that bottle,’ he growled.

‘There’s nothing there,’ he said a few seconds later. ‘You’re freaked. Just all that bloody muck you throw abou’. What’s the ****ing river for? You put this ou’? I trod on i’, painful like.’

‘Naw. Wha’ is i’?’

‘Old lamp. I’ll chuck it. They can clear i’ when I move ou’.’

‘We, Craig, we.’

‘Yea. Can’t you keep that ****ing kid quiet? I’m watching Coronation Street.’
